In 1961, 59 small-scale coffee growers from Nandayure, Guanacaste, united with the goal of improving their living conditions and obtaining a better price for their coffee.

Today Coope Cerro Azul has more than 140 associates and sells an annual total of 4000 quintales of coffee per year to the Alternative Coffee Market through their association with Coocafe. This way, Coope Cerro Azul can assure a higher and more stable price for their members.

Coope Cerro Azul does not only worry about selling their coffee; the cooperative also pays special attention to the entire process of producing coffee, from the beginning to end. The cooperative offers many services to their members including technical assistance and advice and always encourages sustaianable coffee production, the use of shade trees, and soil conservation. In fact, since 1982 the cooperative has reforested more than 400 hectares of land, which has benefited more than 100 members of the cooperative.

Cooperative members have other benefits as well, the cooperative guarantees low prices in their various stores which include a hardware store, a store dedicated to agricultural products, and three general stores located in Nandayure, Carmona y Los Ángeles. Coope Ceroo Azul also offer credit and other support services for all of their members.
The cooperative also contributes to the local community and supports educational programs, land re-distribution initiatives, local development projects and even provides economic support to the local development committee.
