Coope Montes de Oro is situated high up in the hills of Montes de Oro, in the district of La Union and Pitahaya, in the province of Puntarenas.

160 small-scale coffee producers established the cooperative in 1983 and today Coope Montes de Oro has more than 450 proud members.

The coffee growers of Coope Montes de Oro have an average of only one hectare of land each, but they collectively produce more than 13,000 fanegas (100 lbs.) of coffee per year.

Since it was established in 1983, Montes de Oro has continued to build upon its impressive record of improving the lives of its coffee producers and conserving the environment.

With the support of the Mesoamerican Development Institute, Coope Montes de Oro developed and operates one of the very first solar powered coffee drying systems in the world. In addition to
helping the environment, this innovative technology has produced a better quality bean, thereby helping to establish a good reputation for the associates of the cooperative who produce high quality Pacific Hard Bean Coffee.

Coope Montes de Oro has also certified its processes under the international ISO 14001 Environmental standards. Among other initiatives, the cooperative produces organic soil from the recycled coffee pulp and utilizes oxidation lakes to treat the wastewater.

The co-operative also produces its own brand of roasted coffee called Café Sombrero, consumed by the associates and the local population.
