Scholarship program for secondary school students

There are still costs associated with attending public schools, such as purchasing school supplies, notebooks and the mandatory uniform. For some families, especially those with more than one child, these costs can be unaffordable. To assist with these costs, scholarships of $150US are offered to students who are committed to their studies but lack financial means.

Fifty percent of the scholarship is a grant, the other fifty per cent is an interest free loan that is paid back by the student's family at the end of the year. This policy generates funds so future students can benefit as well.

Scholarships for students pursuing higher education
Beneficiaries of this fund are university students from rural areas and those qualified in technical careers who want to upgrade their skills. The scholarships are $350US annually. The goal of this program is to strengthen human resources in the rural zones and improve the leadership and development capabilities of people from the communities. At the same time, by training and offering educational opportunities to more people in rural areas, social and economic benefits are returned to the communuity.
Adopt a school program

Hijos del Campo helps to identify the needs of schools in rural areas and provides financial support for new infrastructure, teaching materials and equipment. It also strives to strengthen the communication and relationships between students’ families and local schools.

The foundation currently provides grants of $450US to rural schools and aims to assist 45 new schools every year. Schools apply to Hijos del Campo for funding for specific projects such as the purchase of teaching materials or the repair of old desks.

Last year, Centro Educativo de Laguna in La Union, Montes de Oro received money to install a new electrical system, repaint classrooms, and buy teaching materials.
"I want to sincerely thank the Foundation for the economic support it has given to the Santa Cecilia school. We used the donated funds to repair and paint walls and to construct sidewalks and walkways. Thanks to the support of Hijos del Campo our school has improved its overall appearance and is a safer learning environment for the students." - Amada Cordero Sanches, Director (COOPABUENA)

Hijos del Campo is seeking sponsors for this program, either individuals or organizations, who want to help students of rural schools receive a better education. Please contact us for information about adopting a school.

Educational Tourism

Hijos del campo offers its services in organizing alternative tourism packages. In addition to raising funds for Hijos del Campo, educational tourism programs facilitae a culural exchange between visitors and agricultural producers and spread awareness about he work of COOCAFE.

What better way is there to experience a country than to live with its people?

Visitors have the opportunity to stay for a few days with rural families who are members of COOCAFE’s co-operatives and they are often put to work in the fields to earn their keep. They see first-hand the benefits of fair trade for the coffee producers they stay with and also experience Costa Rica’s culture frst-hand.
The tours incorporate visits to communities and tourist attractions to balance learning with work and pleasure.

In the past COOCAFE has received visitors, students and volunteers from various organizations from the United States, Belgium, France, Germany and Holland.

The alternative tourism program is a great way for visitors to learn about Costa Rica its people and support the Hijos del Campo Foundation.
